Victorian decorative tiles are a fascinating subject…

We are all familiar with names from Stoke-on-Trent such as Minton. But the real go-to companies are The Godwins of Lugwardine in Herefordshire or Carters of Poole, with their artisan lustre tiles which we were lucky enough to come across at Tudor Grange in Solihull.

Godwins were ‘brilliant encaustic tilemakers whose technical expertise has never been superceded. No-one knows exactly how they did it’ the tile expert Nigel Barrett suggests. We were doubly lucky to find them in the former billiard room at Tettenhall Towers, Wolverhampton.
